Equilibrated Ordinary Chondrite H5, slightly weathered by terrestrial oxidation.

PETROGRAPHY:

The meteorite exhibits a chondritic texture with chondrules ranging from perfectly round to elongated and diameter from 0.2 to 1.1mm (average of 0.5mm). The internal texture of the chondrules is very diversity, such as barred, radial, porphyritic and granular. The matrix is fine-grained, consisting mainly of microcrystalline material. GEOCHEMISTRY:

Optical and electron microprobe analyses by Gomes et al. (1977a) provides the following data: olivine Fa19.5, pyroxene with low Ca (bronzite) Fs17.1 and metallic phase FeNi (kamacite and taenite) as the main constituents. In a smaller quantity are the plagioclases Ab83.9 An11.3 Or4.8 and troilite, while chromite and diopside (pyroxene rich in Ca) are as accessory minerals. In some regions, hydrated iron oxide was observed surrounding some metallic phases, a consequence of terrestrial weathering. Source: Gomes & Keil (1980).

CLASSIFICATION:

The texture and mineralogy support the classification of the chemical H group for the Uberaba meteorite. In addition, this classification is confirmed by the ratios Feº / Ni (7.80), Fe / SiO2 (0.70) and Feº / Fe (0.52), as well as the total concentration of total Fe in the meteorite (26.08%) and total FeNi of 15.28%. The slightly smaller reasons found, compared to group H, are due to the terrestrial oxidation of the FeNi metallic phases. The chondritic texture and the uniformity and heterogeneity of olivines and pyroxenes suggest the petrographic type 5 of Van Schmus & Wood (1967) for the Uberaba meteorite. CLASSIFIERS:

Not reported by the Meteoritical Bulletin Database. A detailed study on the Uberaba meteorite was carried out by Gomes et al. (1977a). Source: Gomes & Keil (1980).

HISTORY:

The Uberaba meteorite fell in the morning (10 am local time) on June 29, 1903. The fall site was at Fazenda do Capitão Grosso, in the district of Dores dos Campos Formosos, approximately 84 kilometers from the city of Uberaba. According to witnesses, detonation sounds, lights traveling from the NE to SE direction and a 30-40kg fragment surrounding the falling meteorite were observed. Source: Gomes & Keil (1980).
