Iron Meteorite, Ungrouped.

PETROGRAPHY:

The iron meteorite Barbacena exhibits a Widmanstätten pattern and also an irregular network of kamacite bands, including axes ranging from 100 to 400 micrometers in width and centimeters in length, with numerous plessite fields with characteristics of the two groups IVA and IIC. The kamacite is clear and has Neumann lines. Taenite appears as a discontinuous border that separates the kamacite lamellae. Plessite fields exhibit a clear and very homogeneous Taenite border. Phosphide segregates were often observed in the center of the kamacite lamellae. Source: Zucolotto & Pinto (2000).

GEOCHEMISTRY:

The chemical analysis performed by instrumental analysis by neutron activation (INAA) Fe (10.5%), Ni (0.5%), Co (12.6ppm), Ga (2.98ppm), Ir and Au (1, 9ppm), allowed Wasson to classify this meteorite as ungrouped. Source: Zucolotto & Pinto (2000).

HISTORY:

Two oxidized masses weighing 6.1 and 2.9 kg respectively were found in March 1918 near the city of Barbacena. It was donated to the Ouro Preto School of Mines in 1931 by Engineer Fannôr Cumplido. According to Oliveira (1931) "It was surrounded by an abundant shell, produced by the successive exfoliation of the surface by oxidation indicating a long stay in the place."
